Tallahassee, Florida

A- Overview:
Nearer to Atlanta than Miami, Tallahassee is “The Other Florida” in attitude, topography, climate and lifestyle. This northern Florida city blends a casual Southern style with the vibrant atmosphere of a major city. Tallahassee also holds the distinction of being the capital of the state of Florida.

“Tallahassee” is an Apalachee Indian word meaning “old town” or “abandoned fields”. The original inhabitants knew a good thing when they saw it. It is hard to imagine that this thriving city was once named for abandoned fields. Today there are many things to see and do in Tallahassee that the Apalachee Indians didn’t even dream about. A visit to this city today might take the lucky visitor in many directions. Of course, there is Florida State University, one of the best known universities in the United States. With year round activities taking place on campus, including the famous “Seminoles” games, a visit there is well worth the trip.

For a glimpse of the not too distant past, be sure to visit the Knott House Museum. This historic museum is a time capsule, restored to its 1928 splendor. The Knott House is one of the oldest buildings and the only house museum in the state capital’s Park Avenue Historic District. Within the 160-year-old walls, notes of verse penned by Luella Pugh Knott tell the story of the family which lived in the house between the two world wars. Enter the historic house and feel time stand still. To experience life well before this time period, a good bet is Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park. Here visitors experience the peace of what was once a bustling Native American community which flourished during the 1200-1500 AD period. The mound complex is interpreted through markers along the trails and exhibit area. Visitors can ascend the tallest of six mounds.

A well known resident of Tallahassee is the Governor of Florida and visitors can actually visit his home. The Governor’s Mansion functions as both the private and public residence of Florida’s chief executive officer and family. It was designed by Palm Beach architect, Marion Sims Wyeth and opened to the public in January 1957. Since that time, the public has been welcomed to tour “The People’s House”. Also, of political interest is the Old Capitol. The Old Capitol houses the Florida Center for Political History and Governance. The building has been restored to its 1902 appearance, symbolizing Florida’s political heritage. Artifacts, photographs and multimedia displays highlight individuals and events that shaped what Florida is today.

When it comes to the weather, any time of year is comfortable for travelers. Winter tends to be the busy season as visitors from the north come south to escape the cold. However, as the capital of Florida as well as the home of Florida State University, any time of year is busy in this cosmopolitan city.

With four very moderate seasons, Tallahassee offers its visitors ideal weather conditions. The summer can get hot with temperatures often exceeding 90 F during the day, so dress accordingly. The evenings do cool off to a more comfortable 70 F, making outdoor activities enjoyable during this time of day. Spring and fall are quite pleasant. With daytime high temperatures near 80 F during the day and the nights a cool 50 F, it’s the perfect time to experience any of the many outdoor activities available. Winters are mild when compared to those of Tallahassee’s northern visitors and all of the sites and attractions are open for visitors. Of course, at any time of the year, there is something of interest taking place in the Capitol complex, around town, and definitely at FSU.

No visit to the area is complete without spending some time at an amusement park. Sam’s Fun City is conveniently located and features over 20 rides, go-karts, bumper boats, and mini golf, as well as an arcade and water park.

Pensacola also is home to many beautiful parks with fountains, play areas and water access. Feed the ducks at Bayview Park or watch an osprey return to its nest with a freshly caught fish at Big Lagoon State Park. And speaking of fishing, the old Pensacola Bay Bridge is one of the longest fishing piers in the US and for just a small charge; you can fish right in the middle of the bay.

Downtown is a place for a leisurely walk and for terrific shopping. Stop at one of the coffee shops, cafes or eateries for lunch, or for an afternoon latte. The downtown area showcases art galleries featuring both local and regional art, as well as the traveling exhibits found in the Pensacola Museum of Art. If antique shopping entices you, antique stores and flea markets pepper the area from the elegant to the eclectic.

The city has been given many nicknames over the years; The Cradle of Naval Aviation, The Western Gate to the Sunshine State, America’s First Settlement, and the City of Five Flags. All such monikers are fitting in their descriptions of this vibrant and beautiful place.

Spend some time in Pensacola – you’ll see why they say it’s where thousands live the way millions wish they could.

Local Seasons:

Pensacola has a very moderate climate year round due to its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and its western Florida location. Winter and summer are the two busiest times of year. In the winter, people from the north enjoy coming south for the warmer temperatures and numerous activities the city has to offer. Even in January the temperature averages a comfortable 52 F, with highs in the mid 60’s F. It’s the time for the Polar Bear Club to hold its annual Polar Bear Dip. Summer is busy as many people visit the area for its relaxing atmosphere, entertainment, and proximity to the beach, not to mention temperatures averaging in the low 80’s F. It’s ideal for watching the annual boat races held during this time while sipping a cool drink at the beach and working on that perfect tan. The Spring and Fall are less crowded and offer a great opportunity to enjoy a little more serenity. Spring is also time for the annual “Mullet Toss”, a must see local event. Fall is still warm enough for a nice day at the beach with a good book or a run in the sand. November is when the Blue Angels, who are based in Pensacola, return home for their annual homecoming air show. No matter what time of year you are visiting, this warm Florida city is alive with a multitude of things to do and see.

Miami Beach, Florida

A- Overview:
Miami Beach is a finger of land separating Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, connected by five causeways to the mainland. At its southern tip is South Beach, known as the Art Deco District, or SoBe. This 10-block stretch of Ocean Drive, which fronts South Beach, is one of the most celebrated ocean fronts in America.

The Art Deco District Welcome Center is located there, along with an eclectic mix of chic restaurants, boutiques, delicatessens, produce markets, outdoor cafes and nightclubs. The palm shaded beach side of Ocean Drive in Miami Beach attracts families to its wide, sandy beach and children’s play area. Volleyball, in-line skating on the winding sidewalk, swimming, sunning and water sports are favorite pastimes. Surfside, Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles make up the northern part of “The Beach.”

The heart of Miami Beach and the Art Deco District, Lincoln Road, is an open-air mall of 175 galleries, shops and restaurants along an eight-block pedestrian promenade with shade trees down the middle. At one time, Lincoln Road was a posh shopping strip equal to Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles. The street was closed to traffic, and in the 1960s, it began to decline.

In step with the South Beach renaissance, Lincoln Road has been transformed into a row of successful art galleries, lively performing-arts showcases and trendy cafes. Visitors can stroll through numerous galleries or admire the Lincoln Theater, home of the New World Symphony. There is also a delightful Sunday flea market and farmers market.

Some of the more popular attractions in the greater Miami area are Viscaya Museum and Gardens, Little Havana, Museum of Science and Space Transit Planetarium, and the Miami Metro Zoo. Biscayne Boulevard is a prime spot for shopping. It features the Bayside Marketplace- a shopping experience in the Tropical style. Shopping is also excellent at the Cocowalk shopping and entertainment complex.

The Greater Miami area has over thirty golf courses. Other recreational opportunities include wind surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing. Perfect weather and flat terrain make Miami Beach popular with bicyclists.

The best time to visit is winter, but in the off-season (after Easter and before October) there is still plenty to do and rates are more reasonable. For sun, sand and tropical beauty, Miami Beach is the place to be.
